From the 1400s to the 1600s, the world was full of mysteries waiting to be explored. This period, known as the Age of Exploration, was a time when adventurers sailed across oceans to discover new lands, trade goods, and gain wealth. It wasn’t just about adventure—it was also about clever business ideas that changed the world.

Spain and Portugal sent explorers like Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), Vasco da Gama (1460-1524), and Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) to find new trade routes. These explorers were like today’s startup founders. They had big ideas, sailing west to reach Asia. They convinced kings, queens, or wealthy merchants to fund their ships and crews. For example, in 1492, Columbus persuaded Queen Isabella of Spain to back his voyage, which led to the discovery of the Americas. These trips were risky—storms, shipwrecks, or getting lost were real dangers—but a successful voyage could bring huge rewards, like gold or new trade routes.

Merchants were the masterminds behind all these activities, who turned discoveries into profits. They didn’t just sail to new lands; they built trade networks to bring back valuable goods (spices, silk, and sugar). Spices (pepper and cinnamon) were worth as much as gold because they made food taste better and lasted a long time. These goods were sold in Europe, making merchants very wealthy.

One of the business ideas of this time was the joint-stock company. These were early versions of modern companies where many investors pooled their money to fund overseas trade. Famous examples include the British East India Company (founded in 1600), the Dutch East India Company (founded in 1602), the Portuguese East India Company (established in 1628), and the French East India Company (founded in 1664). These companies had ships, warehouses, and even armies to protect their trade routes. Explorers found new lands and countries. Britain, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands set up colonies in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Colonies were like outposts where they could grow crops, mine gold, or trade with locals. Ships brought back gold, silver, sugar, tobacco, silk, and spices to Europe, where they were sold for huge profits. The Age of Exploration connected the world like never before. Europe sent ships, weapons, and goods. The Americas provided sugar, tobacco, gold, and silver. Asia supplied spices, silk, and tea. Africa was forced to provide minerals and enslaved people. This created a global trade network, where businesses were no longer limited to a region.

Sea voyages were dangerous and could take months or years to complete. Ships faced storms, pirates, or conflicts. But a successful trip could make investors incredibly rich.
